This very unusual and unique carved ramshorn ammonite skull is from Madagascar and is well over 66 million years old. He was once a mollusc bobbing around in the ocean! Ammonites were some of the first creatures to inhabit planet Earth and are related to our current squid and octopus. They were wiped out during the same period as the dinosaurs. When they became extinct they fossilised over time and mineralisation occurred.

This ammonite displays very attractive ribbing and is adorned with some beautiful intricate suture leaf like patterns on his horn, where there is also some very nice mineralised calcite in a variety of earthy browns and honey shades. The suture patterns are the mineralised markings resulting from the complex inner chamber system of the living ammonite.

This ammonite specimen has been brought ‘alive’ and oozes character with the carving of a skull. The carving is beautifully done and gives the ammonite new meaning.

The spiralling ramshorn whorl is a wonderful example of sacred geometry and there is much symbolism to be found in this stunning specimen.

The name ammonite is associated with the Egyptian god Amun, known to the Greeks as Ammon. He can be seen depicted on coins and as sculptures with curling rams horns on his head.

This unique carved ramshorn ammonite skull weighs 1kg and measures 13.5 x 11 x 6.5cm

He is extremely collectible and will never be repeated

MORE INFORMATION

When ammonites were alive and bobbing around in the oceans as far back as the Jurassic period 200 million years ago, they had a chambered shell that they used for buoyancy and to propel them through the water. . As the tiny creatures grew they developed new chambers in their shells, and moved into the new larger chamber, sealing off the earlier one with walls known as septa, and filling it with gas / fluid. This strengthened the shell and prevented it being crushed by water pressure. The gas filled chamber helped to regulate buoyancy.

As the shells grew and expanded they evolved into a spiral, known as a whorl. Many had ribs, spines and knobs which further strengthened the shell and provided protection and camouflage. They also helped with stability and buoyancy.

AMMONITE FOSSILS

Some of the fossilised ammonites have layers of nacre, also known as mother of pearl, on the surface. This is made up of aragonite platelets and displays an iridescence, due to the play of light. The thicker nacre produces reds and greens, the thinner nacre produces blues, purples, and pinks. This particular ammonite formation is known as ammolite. Due to the arrangement of the platelet layers, the nacre is strong, resilient, tough and protective. The nacre has an hexagonal lattice system.

As the ammonites fossilised, they mineralised into calcite. Often this calcite can be seen on the outer surface, and as part of the intricate suture leaf like patterning. The colours are generally very earthy, with brown and yellowy orange ochre hues.

METAPHYSICAL HEALING PROPERTIES

Ripe with metaphysical healing properties due their overall make up, lifespan and history, ammonites are ideal specimens for spiritual healing, and particularly deep inner healing. They are also ideal for exploring ancestral connection. This ancestral connection will be enhanced by the skull and they are perfect for placing on an ancestral altar.

The natural growth and development of the ammonite represents independence and innate wisdom and knowledge. It also represents personal development and growth, resilience, self preservation, survival and protection.

Those that developed ribs and knobs have further associations with strength, protection, stability and buoyancy.

Those with nacre presence have added associations with strength, resilience, endurance and protection. They also have associations with the colour spectrum and light rays.

The spiral whorl represents infinity, growth, spiritual development, cosmic support, guidance, focus, wisdom and kundalini energy

The hexagonal lattice system of the nacre represents the number 6, balance, harmony, protection, spiritual union, life purpose, opportunity, lightbody / merkaba activation, masculine / feminine.

The trigonal lattice system of calcite represents balance, stability, strength, manifestation, creativity and inspiration. The colours of the calcite are very earthy and therefore grounding. They work well with the three lower chakra points, root, sacral and solar plexus.

The association with water must surely play a part in the symbolic metaphysical connection. This is a useful element to explore when utilising the energies of the ammonite for spiritual healing purposes. And by the way, the ammonite skulls just love having a dip in the river and sea!

These ancient, now fossilised beings represent life cycles, preservation, transformation, solidity and flexibility to change.

The skull carvings offer potent symbolism and greatly enhance the metaphysical associations of the ammonite fossil.
