Carved Ramshorn Ammonite Double Skull
This very unusual and unique carved ramshorn ammonite double skull is from Madagascar and is well over 66 million years old. He was once a mollusc bobbing around in the ocean! Ammonites we’re some of the first creatures to inhabit planet Earth and are related to our current squid and octopus. They were wiped out during the same period as the dinosaurs. When they became extinct they fossilised over time and mineralisation occurred. This cleoniceras ammonite is adorned with beautiful intricate suture leaf like patterns all over his body. They are the mineralised markings resulting from the complex inner chamber system of the living ammonite.
This particular ammonite specimen has been brought ‘alive’ and oozes character with the carving of two skulls. The carving is beautifully done and gives the ammonite new meaning.
The spiralling ramshorn whorl is a wonderful example of sacred geometry and there is much symbolism to be found in this stunning specimen.
The name ammonite is associated with the Egyptian god Amun, known to the Greeks as Ammon. He can be seen depicted on coins and as sculptures with curling rams horns on his head.
